Shrewsbury is poised to host its very own equivalent of Live Aid, it has been revealed.
Prolific fundraiser Philip Welsby, from Belle Vue, has already booked the West Mid Showground for the massive charity gig on July 21, 2012.
He has set up a committee to help organise what he hopes will be a smash hit success, with attractions for families in the day time and a concert in the evening, to which Philip hopes to attract some big name bands.
All proceeds will go to the armed forces’ charity Help for Heroes.
Philip said: “I’ve done a lot of events at the Lord Hill which attract up to 200 people, but we’re hoping to get thousands of people to this one.
“It’s very early stages and there’s a lot to sort out, we hope to get some big name bands including Brother of Soul and hopefully many of the local bands will perform as well.
“I know a lot of bands from organising events before and just hope we can get a great line-up sorted out.”
He added: “During the day we will have some good old fashioned family fun including a train running around the showground, a bouncy castle, stalls, a fairground.
“Then in the evening we will have all of the bands performing in the arena and people can bring picnics and make a real day of it.”
Philip recently sent a cheque for £800 to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool following a successful evening at the Lord Hill Hotel.
“Shrewsbury is a great town and I can’t believe no-one’s done anything for charity on this scale before.
“I’ve had lots of support already and I hope the whole town gets involved.
“We just want everyone to have a good time and raise a lot of money,” added Philip.
