A scheme to help reduce obesity rates among primary school youngsters is being piloted in two schools near Shrewsbury.
Mum-of-two Karina Davies recently set up her ‘FitKid’ franchise and is hoping to roll out fitness classes at schools across town.
Funded by Shropshire Council’s Sports Unlimited, one-hour sessions are set to take place at Minsterley Primary School and Hope Primary School on September 13, as part of an eight-week trial programme.
Other classes will be held at Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn and the Trinity Centre in Meole Brace for youngsters aged from 18 months to 16 years.
The after-school sessions involve a number of calorie-busting games after an initial warm-up, as well as teaching the children about healthy eating.
Other sessions, which are based around the popular TV show Lazy Town, involve fitness activities using music from the show.
Karina said: “I am very committed to making this work because it has huge potential and the aim is to secure all the funding I can and take this into every primary school in Shrewsbury.
“I understand what the council targets are for physical activity and this hits the target in every aspect.”
Rod Thomson, director of public health for Shropshire County PCT said: “The PCT supports any good quality initiative that encourages local children to get more active safely.”
