The Chronicle’s Lingen Davies Cancer Centre Appeal is just £100,000 from its final total – after a mysterious donor gave it a massive £25,000 boost.
The cheque was sent into appeal bosses by a long-standing supporter of the charity from Shrewsbury who wishes to remain anonymous, but who said she wanted to pass on her good luck to others.
The appeal – which now stands at £3.1 million – needs to raise a further £100,000 to reach the £3.2 million target to enable work to begin on a new dedicated cancer centre at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
This will provide a new clinic for haematology patients and increase space in the chemotherapy centre.
Charity officials are hopeful that with a final push, building work on the centre will be able to get under way next year, with completion expected by 2012.
Eryl Williams, appeal fundraising manager, said the cheque was sent in by a female donor who said: “I’ve had some good luck recently and I wanted to share it with a local cancer charity.
“I have been a supporter of Lingen Davies Cancer Relief Fund for many years and I feel it’s a very good cause.”
Mrs Williams said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive such a fantastic donation, and I would like to say a huge thank you for this very generous amount, which has certainly given our appeal a huge boost.”
Upcoming events include the charity’s big Christmas activity – the Reindeer Trot – which last year raised more than £3,000.
This year runners or walkers are urged to get involved in the six-mile event which leaves the RSH at 10.30am on Sunday, December 5, and enter into the festive spirit by dressing up.
Entrance is £10, sponsor forms are optional and appeal bosses hope as many people as possible will get involved. For registration packs for the Trot or to find out how to get involved contact the appeal’s office on 01743 492396.
