Heroes remembered

Silence fell over Shrewsbury as a number of events were held throughout the town to remember those who lost their lives fighting for their country.

Last Thursday, the two minute Armistice Day silence was marked at 11am in the town’s Square. Mayor Councillor Kath Owen, representatives from the Royal British Legion,

standard bearers, cadets and the town crier Martin Wood were joined by members of the public to mark the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month – the anniversary of the day World War One ended in 1918.

Town clerk Helen Ball said: “It was impeccably marked. The town went quiet to respect everybody who has died in theatres of war. With Afghanistan and Iraq still going on,

it’s even more essential that we still do that.”

On Sunday, the official Remembrance Day parade was held through the town when hundreds of armed forces representatives marched from Shrewsbury Castle to St Chad’s for a service and laying of wreaths. More than 1,000 people joined in the service.

Councillor Owen laid a wreath on behalf of the people of Shrewsbury while Councillor Keith Barrow laid a wreath for the county.

Mrs Ball said: “The parade was a great success with crowds lining the entire route and about 1,000 people in the church. We had representatives from all three forces and a good turn out from the cadet associations and other youth organisations.”
