More snow forecast as big chill continues

Shawbury registered the coldest temperature in England as the lowest ever November temperature was recorded in the village.

As large parts of the country felt the full force of the biting winter freeze this week with several inches of snow deposited in the Shrewsbury area, Shawbury saw its temperature plummet to -12.5C on Saturday night.

The record-breaking temperature was taken at the MET office weather station which is situated within the grounds of RAF Shawbury.

Shawbury Parish Council chairman Jill Manley said she was made aware of the record low on Sunday and that residents in the village were looking out for each other, particularly elderly residents, during the unprecedented cold snap.

Meanwhile, disruption has been caused countywide with sporting events cancelled due to frozen pitches, and Shropshire Wildlife Trust’s tree planting event this weekend has been postponed due to the icy conditions.

Carl Pickup, the trust’s reserves manager, said: “Tree roots are susceptible to frost, so it’s not a good time to plant.

“The local roads are also icy and the wind will be bitterly cold – not the most enjoyable conditions to work in.”

Bosses said the event, at Nipstone on the Stiperstones, would still see 750 trees planted at a later date when weather conditions improved.

More snowfall hit the town yesterday morning, Wednesday, and conditions were set to continue with more snow forecast today.

Temperatures are not expected to rise above freezing until the weekend.
