Former mayoress launches book

A former mayoress of Shrewsbury and stalwart fundraiser has penned a book about her experiences fighting cancer which will be launched at a charity sale tomorrow, Friday.

Judy Townsend was diagnosed with oral cancer in the summer, and following a major operation in July has been convalescing and receiving further radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment.

Her husband Alan, last year’s mayor, said Judy was recovering well and decided to use her experiences to raise money for Severn Hospice – a cause the pair have a long association with. Over the years they have raised more than £13,000 for the charity.

They hope to hit £15,000 following events this year, which include a Christmas sale being held at The English Bridge Workshop from 6pm to 9pm tomorrow, and from 10am to 4.30pm Saturday and Sunday. Friday night will also be the official launch of Judy’s book.

Judy has recorded the time since her operation in a series of sketches and notes and her eldest daughter, Sally, has published the jottings just as they were scribbled at the time. The rest of the family have also added their particular memories to Judy’s account.

The sale will be organised by the Art Society and has been an annual event since 2003. Alan said as he and his wife had not had much time to paint, a number of donations have been submitted for the sale.

“The result is a unique exhibition and an opportunity to buy individual but reasonably priced presents. A very special book can also be yours for a £10 donation, to be divided between the Hospice and Lingen Davies Appeal.”

Copies of the book can also be obtained by ringing Judy and Alan on 01743 236302.
