Ben Ashcroft wrapped up the individual under-15 boys’ title with another fine display in the crisp snow in the final round of the Shropshire Young Athletes Cross Country League at Bridgnorth’s Oldbury Wells School.
Ben, a pupil at the Grange School, was in the driving seat for honours after another consistent season and claimed first place by holding off a strong challenge from Oswestry’s Jimmy Kershaw, with his efforts helping to steer Shrewsbury Athletic Club’s under-15 boys to a team bronze medal.

Shrewsbury’s under-13 boys picked up an impressive team silver as they emerged runners-up to Telford who went into the final round in an unassailable position.
Great team running has seen the Shrewsbury boys score well and the finale produced probably their best display. Luke Howes led the charge through the first lap, closely checked by Stuart Duff and Ross Kirby, with Freddie Turner in close contention as they all clinched places in the top 11.
“Consistency throughout the season has seen the boys’ team rewarded with two team medals and Ben’s individual title,” said Shrewsbury AC spokesman Dom Kirby. “The core of the under-11 boys will again be eligible for the same competition next season which has real potential for continued improvement.”
