Motorists call for action over potholes

Giant potholes and cracks in the road are putting drivers and their cars in danger on a Shrewsbury retail park, it is claimed.

Shoppers at Meole Brace Retail Park, on Hereford Road, have seen roads deteriorate in recent weeks as the freezing conditions have started to wear away the surface.

The worst affected areas are said to be on the entrance to the privately-owned retail park and the second roundabout opposite McDonald’s and Pizza Hut.

Shoppers have reported damage to their cars caused by large potholes and cracks.

A Sutton Farm resident who wished not to be named said: “The roads leading into Meole Brace Retail Park have been cracked and full of potholes for at least a year if not longer.

“The recent icy weather has made the situation ten times worse and last week I was driving into the retail park, and on the roundabout just outside McDonald’s there is a pothole so large that the wheel of the car disappeared into the ground as I drove round. I was appalled.”

Councillor Ted Clarke, for Bayston Hill, Column and Sutton, said: “It is that piece of road outside the petrol station and it has been getting progressively worse.

“I assumed that it must have been left until the general expansion of Sainsbury’s goes ahead but I do hope that once the weather improves it will be looked at.”

Investment management company LaSalle are thought to own the retail park but were unavailable to comment as the Chronicle went to press.
