House of Fraser ‘closing’ blunder

Hundreds of shoppers feared Shrewsbury’s last remaining department store was about to shut its doors this week after a letter was sent to customers in a ‘massive’ error.

As many as 200 letters were sent to customers of Regis hair salon, based in House of Fraser, on High Street, last week explaining that the department store, as well as the salon, was closing down.

This led to many fearing that a big feature of the town centre was to go, as well as dozens of jobs lost.

The letters were sent out last Friday stating: ‘House of Fraser Shrewsbury is closing’ before going on to inform customers about the nearest available hair salon in town.

But red-faced Shrewsbury House of Fraser bosses have admitted that a ‘massive’ error had been made.

The letter intended to say the in-store Regis Salon was shutting its doors as part of a nationwide move to phase the hairdressers out. New letters were sent to customers on Tuesday explaining the error.

Francesca Johnson, the regional communications manager for House of Fraser, said: “House of Fraser Shrewsbury remains very much open; however Regis Salons will be closing as part of their phased withdrawal across our whole business. There has been a massive miscommunication and the letter was mistakenly sent out but we are very much alive for trading.”
