Revamp prompts one-day closure

A Shrewsbury supermarket will close for a day next week for bosses to carry out a host of improvements to the store, including the arrival of a new clothing chain.

Morrisons, Whitchurch Road, Harlescott, will shut on Monday and re-open the following day to minimise disruption to customers.

Paul Fitzjohn, corporate affairs press officer for Wm Morrisons Supermarket Plc, told the Chronicle all the checkouts will be replaced with ‘more attractive, aesthetically pleasing’ back to back checkouts and aisle widths will also be increased to provide more space for customers.

And budget clothes chain Peacocks will open up a concession in store. It is not yet known if any jobs will be created.

Meanwhile, dump bins which used to sit down the aisles will be removed and built into the ends of the aisles freeing up more space.

Mr Fitzjohn said: “We believe that by closing the store for a day, rather than carrying out the work on evenings and weekends, it will cause the least amount of disruption to our neighbours and customers and ultimately provide them with a greater shopping experience.”
