Residents are invited to join a demonstration against public spending cuts in London this month – with more than 500 people signed up from Shrewsbury to date.
On March 26, the TUC National Demonstration Against Cuts will set out from the Embankment at 11am for a rally in Hyde Park.
More than a million people are expected to take part, with 15 coaches booked to take people from the county to the demonstration.
It follows a well-supported march in Shrewsbury last month, when hundreds of people brought the town centre to a standstill in a colourful and vocal protest alongside representatives from Unison, the teachers’ union NASUWT and The Wakeman and Stiperstones schools which are threatened with closure.
Now the organisers, Shropshire Fights Back, are urging residents to join the demonstration in London which will be stewarded by local trade unionists.
Mike Edwards, of Shropshire & Telford Trades Council, said: “Our aim is to take at least 1,000 people down to London for the March 26 demonstration and we are well on the way to achieving that figure.
“We have over 500 people signed up for the trip already and we will be leafleting over the next two and a half weeks and talking to people in town centres and in the local workplaces that are facing job cuts to encourage more people to come along and make their feelings known.”
Coaches will leave Shrewsbury Abbey at 7am on the Saturday morning. To book visit www.shropshirefightsback.org.uk/contactus.htm
