Council opposes plan for pub site

Plans to turn a disused pub in Ditherington into a local convenience supermarket have been opposed by Shrewsbury Town Council.

The plans, put forward by MGA Developers, would see the empty Six Bells on Ditherington Road bulldozed and transformed into a new shopping development, complete with two retail units.

One of the units will be a local convenience store – leased out to a major supermarket chain, the other could be a takeaway or chemist. Agent Chris Waumsley said up to 25 jobs would be created through the scheme.

However, in a statement to planning authorities, Shrewsbury Town Council objects to the application claiming the area is unsuitable for the development.

It read: “This area of town is not suited to retail but would be better suited to residential.

“There are already a number of convenience stores in the near vicinity and members would prefer to see the space used for affordable housing.”

Member of Shrewsbury Town Council for Castlefields and Ditherington, Councillor Alan Mosley, said he had been approached by many residents who had concerns about the plans.

He said: “People question the need for another supermarket and are worried about the possible smell from a new takeaway.

“Within this area there is already a Morrisons, Spar, Tesco Express, and up the road is another massive Tesco.

“The area is over populated with convenience stores. There is also a takeaway opposite the site and other chip shops down the road. I would question whether we need any more.

“Although it would create jobs, the added competition in an area already overcrowded with shops might lead to other jobs going down the line.”

Mr Waumsley, said: “We are disappointed the town council has objected to the proposal for a small local food store which will bring more shopping choice for local people, create jobs and regenerate a vacant site.”

A decision on the application by Shropshire Council is expected on May 30.
