Speaker’s wife visits crisis-hit day centre

The wife of the Speaker of the House of Commons will visit users of the Grange Day Centre in Harlescott to join the campaign to save the service.

Outspoken political activist Sally Bercow, wife of John Bercow, will stop by the only day centre in the county for people with physical disabilities on June 29, at 1.30pm.

Nicky Clark, from Copthorne, who launched a campaign to save the centre which will shut its doors next month, told the Chronicle Mrs Bercow was ‘very supportive’ of the campaign to keep it open.

“I wrote to Sally and she wanted to lend her support in any way she could,” said Nicky.

“She will be coming down and meeting the users and seeing if she can offer help with a view to getting involved with the campaign.

“The vast majority of the service users are devastated about the centre shutting and want to keep it open,” she added.

The Grange, which won prizes at the Mayor’s Awards, had been nominated by the late Eileen Sandford who was a keen supporter of its work. But it is due to close on July 29 as part of Shropshire Council’s spending cuts, despite a 1,250 name petition to save it.

As a replacement, users are being allocated personal budgets which they can spend on activities that are suitable for their needs.

Shropshire Council has said that while the building used by the Grange is closing, the care and support it provides will still remain accessible to people in the county.
