Parking charges on Sundays may be cut

SUNDAY parking charges could be slashed at all council-owned car parks across Shrewsbury, it was revealed this week.

All nine Shropshire Council-run car parks in Shrewsbury town centre would be included in the reduction under a review of car parking across the county.

Currently car parks such as Raven Meadows charge up to £6 on a Sunday for six hours of parking but if the new changes are approved all car parks will be subject to a £2.50 flat rate fee.

The council’s enterprise and growth scrutiny committee will discuss the findings of the review at its meeting tomorrow, Friday, and depending on the views raised, the proposals will then go forward for consultation with parish and town councils during the summer.

If the plans are implemented in Shrewsbury, it would affect car parks at Bridge Street, The Tannery, St Austin’s, Abbey Foregate, Frankwell and St Julian’s Friars.

The move is part of a Shropshire Council shake-up aimed at bringing more shoppers into the county’s towns following a big fall in car park revenue.

The authority saw its car parking profit fall by £470,000 in the 2011/12 financial year.
